More Than Preventive Care

At The Gentle Vet, we’re here for you and your pet when something is wrong. With acute illnesses and injuries, we’ll utilize our diagnostic tools to find out what’s wrong, and what we need to do to treat it. As the pet parent, we take our cues from you. Any irregularity should be medically evaluated and treated by a general practice that cares. This is where we come in.

What We Often See

At times, it’s hard to know what to look for in sick pets. Here are some common symptoms and illnesses we treat:

  • Excessive itching/scratching
  • Ear and skin infections
  • Torn toenails
  • Acute vomiting & diarrhea
  • Coughing
  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Decreased appetite
  • Increased drinking & urinating
  • Straining or unable to urinate (this is an emergency which should be treated immediately.)
  • Inappropriate eliminations (urinating/defecating in the house, or outside of the litterbox)
  • Constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss or weight gain (without a change in diet)
  • Any visible injuries
  • Allergic reactions (swollen face/muzzle, hives)

Emergencies

While the former list is pressing, these symptoms may not always warrant an immediate trip to the hospital. While we will always do our very best to be available in an emergency, sometimes it’s for your pet’s best interest to be seen at an emergency clinic right away.

Symptoms which are more serious in nature and should be treated immediately are:

  • Respiratory distress/trouble breathing
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Pale gums
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Obvious fractures of bones
  • Inability to urinate
  • Yellow skin/eyes
