Is Benadryl Safe for Dogs?

When your furry friend is suffering and itchy, it is only natural to want to do something to help. It is tempting to reach for something from your own medicine cabinet, but is Benadryl for pets really a safe or effective choice? The Gentle Vet is here to help.
A Note About Over-the-Counter Medications
There are definitely a few reasons to think twice before offering your pet any medication that has not been prescribed or cleared by a veterinarian. It is true that human medications for pets are sometimes prescribed. If you are not well-versed in animal physiology and pharmacology, though, this can be a little risky.
Pets are not people. They often require different doses of medication than is on the label. Different species metabolize drugs differently as well. Just because pets can take some human medications does not mean that they all are safe. Some types of human medications can be ineffective or even deadly.
Even a safe and appropriately-dosed medication can still do more harm than good.. Medication use can change or mask symptoms and make it more difficult for us to diagnose your pet.
Benadryl for Pets
Benadryl is the brand name for the over-the-counter medication diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine, often used in human allergy sufferers.
Benadryl is not FDA approved for use in pets, but it is used for veterinary patients. In particular we use it to reduce symptoms like:
- Anaphylactic reaction
- Hives
- Facial swelling
- Itching and inflammation
Anywhere histamine release causes an issue, Benadryl can help. Diphenhydramine also causes drowsiness as a side-effect, which can be desirable to treat symptoms of anxiety
Benadryl is a relatively safe medication, but it shouldn’t be used without consulting us first regarding appropriateness and dosing. It is important to note that Benadryl formulations with xylitol or other ingredients like antihistamines can be dangerous for pets.
Many pet parents like to try Benadryl for seasonal allergies and itching, and while it can be a reasonable starting point, it isn’t terribly effective as a long-term solution. For pets with a bee sting, a diagnosis of mast cell tumors, or even vaccine reactions, diphenhydramine can be extremely helpful. We wish it helped more for seasonally itchy skin!
If your pet suffers from skin allergies, don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss the options. Pet skin allergies can be a frustrating issue, but we have many good options to help pets who suffer from this affliction.
